The 2017 San Diego Underground Film Festival lineup has been announced, Generation screens Friday August 25th in a programme with works by Sky Hopkina, Karissa Hahn, Josh Weissbach, Ryan Wicks, Jeremy Moss and more! The full selection of artists is outstanding, I wish I could be there in person!

Spring is starting off very busy for me, with six events in a single week! Field (2016) will be presented at Athens International Film + Video Festival. Cinema 25 in Manchester will be hosting a full retrospective of my film and video works. This event is my first international solo show and I am honoured that it will take place over two nights and include all of my works to date, curated and hosted by Christian Dymond. On Saturday April 8th, I will be performing live DJ and VJ sets at Electric Circuits Festival, and taking part in a panel discussion on digital art in the afternoon at the Tett Center. Factory Media Center in Hamilton, ON, will present Poem (2015) in a great programme with filmmakers Barbara Sternberg, Kelly Egan and Josephine Massarella attending in person. Routes (2011) screens at Sessió Xcèntric, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, curated by Albert Alcoz. Festival of Light (2007) at Museum of Fine Arts, Angers, France. And the world premiere of Concrescence (2017) screens at NOFEST in Milan.

I was commissioned by Images Festival to make the official trailer for this year's festival. This was a great honour, and since it is Images' 30th anniversary, I decided to pay homage to the festival's staff, artists and attendees by creating a collage out of the nearly 15,000 images in their archives. If you've ever been to Images before you will see some familiar faces, and maybe even yourself. Other things of note: I recently published a short text, "Notes on the Fragile Image," in Otherzine; My work was featured in two music videos, video documentation of my live sets at Audiopollination #51 have been posted online, and upcoming presentations at CSIF $100 Film Festival, Athens International Film and Video Festival, NOFEST, and more.

This winter I'm taking a breather from making new works in order to focus on my dissertation, which centres around process-based aesthetics and decay in experimental film. Writing about decay and the world feels very appropriate right now, I think I chose a timely topic! Been reading a lot of theory and am excited by my recent discovery of Bataille's The Accursed Share, which I feel perfectly summarizes the role of avant-garde cinema—looking forward to writing on this connection, which seems to have gone unaddressed. I've also completed some notes towards a short theoretical/aesthetic manifesto called "The Fragile Image," that is an attempt to work through some common themes in my practices. Whatever happened to the days when artists wrote creative manifestos? We need more of that!

Recap of the past year: I managed 52 screenings, installations, and live performances, including five solo presentations and a Loop Collective touring programme that spanned coast to coast. I made seven new 16mm films, a handful of other projects, and resurrected four older films with digital restorations. I finally placed all of my work in distribution with CFMDC and Light Cone. My films were mentioned on several 'best of' year end lists, and I was happy to do my first lengthy interview on my filmmaking. I have three new projects in process that I am confident will be among my best work to date, and I began several new collaborations and working relationships with other artists and organizations that I look forward to continuing in the coming year.
december 2016
This month I am touring the "Loop Collective: Recent Works" programme at Canadian Film Institute's Café Ex Series in Ottawa on December 7th, followed by two screenings at La Lumière in Montreal on December 8th and 9th, featuring the Loop programme and a solo programme of my own 16mm films, entitled "Materia Prima." This second programme will be similar to what was shown at Early Monthly Segments in October, and I am looking forward to presenting the new set of prints of these films, and distributing copies of the Loop Collective book for these last two stops our 20th anniversary tour. Collectivo Toronto will also be presenting Alberta (2014) and Poem (2015) at Club Cultural Matienzo in Buenos Aires, Argentina, December 13-14th, in a great programme curated by Guillermina Buzio. B Movie (2005) will be presented in Montreal at La Lumière on December 16th as part of Contre Courant, a programme of found footage works curated by Guillaume Vallée. Finally, I'm happy to announce that the final show prints of the films in The Lost Cycle are ready and will soon be available for rental via CFMDC and Light Cone.

Newly announced: Early Monthly Segments is pleased to host a screening of the work of local artist Dan Browne. A prolific film and video maker over the last decade, Browne finds himself drawn to the abstract patterns of nature, organizing them visually into immersive films that examine light play and embodied vision.
september 2016
Upcoming screenings include Quanta (2008), presented as part of Light Cone's Scratch Expanded Show on September 17th in Paris. This is a favourite among my own works that is rarely shown, and so I am very appreciative to have it included in an amazing programme of silent films by icons such as Hans Richter, Oskar Fischinger, Maya Deren, Robert Breer, Stan Brakhage, and contemporaries such as Stephen Broomer and Josh Lewis. The event will be a "projection en plein air," don't miss it if you are in Paris. Poem also screens at the BFI London Film Festival in the Experimenta section, in a programme entitled "Reinterpretations of Form" on October 9th. I am very honoured to be included in this programme (alongside the great Ken Jacobs!) and wish I could attend in person.
august 2016
San Diego screening of Poem, new works, and photos from a recent live show at Vector Festival.
june 2016
This month, Graphical Records releases VARIATIONS, a DVD featuring twelve Canadian moving image artists reinterpreting Michael Snow's "Poem" (1957), for which I made my recent eponymous work. Poem was also presented as part of "The New Impressionists" at [S8] Festival in A Coruña, Spain, Alberta was shown at Unseen Zinema in Madrid the same week with a live score by local musicians, and will also be shown at Edge of Frame's new screening series at DIY London on June 30th, and Christian's Curtains received its festival premiere at Winnipeg Underground Film Festival. Finally, I recently shot some documentation of my video installation The Water Suite, which is on permanent rotation as part of Speech Bubble, an LED screen installation by Jennifer Marman + Daniel Borins, at The Pinnacle on Adelaide.

This month in Found Footage Magazine issue #2 there is an article by Clint Enns called "Images Beyond Time: Cinema as Photographic Archive," that considers my film memento mori in the context of Hollis Frampton's (nostalgia) and Derrida's Archive Fever -- wonderful to be in such company, with several other excellent contemporary film artists considered as well in the article, and some very insightful analysis. The whole issue is great, and also features an artist page I contributed with 35mm film frames from B Movie (2005). In other news, my films are now finally available for rental at the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre.
